Meslier Death MaskThe Story

Jean Meslier, a French Catholic priest around the end of the 17th Century and the author of a bitter atheistic testament, was a little-known hero of the Enlightenment, and an instigator of the ideals of the Revolution.

This very human story follows Jean as he leads a dual existence, conforming by day to the yoke of religious fundamentalism, and passionately composing his legacy in private by night. The book he wrote would never be published during his lifetime.

Jean's passion for truth, his stubborn conscience and his cowardly betrayals of his own principles make him a compelling character.

His story, with its disturbing parallels to the issues of today, places this work at the heart of the zeitgeist.

'This is a gem of a play about real history: it tells a powerful and disturbing
story: everyone should see it'

(Margaret Tyzak, Actor)

'A really excellent play about love in a world without God'
(Andrew Brown of The Guardian, and The Church Times)
