Jean Meslier (1664-1729) was an atheist priest in Catholic France. His posthumous "Testament", written in secret during his life, was a scathing critique of the myths of religion, and attack upon the misuse of power by Royalty and The Church itself.

Voltaire (1694-1778), the French deist who vigorously opposed Christianity and sought to fashion his own naturalistic religion, described Meslier as "the most singular phenomenon ever seen among all the meteors fatal to the Christian religion."

Written by David Hall ("Cross Road Blues" sell-out 5 star hit at 2005 Edinburgh Fringe), and directed by David Roylance, (Racing Demon, The Curse of Iain Banks), MESLIER runs at Edinburgh Festival from 14th - 27th August (Venue 186 - Sweet At The Edinburgh College of Art - Box Office, tel: 0870 241 0136).

MESLIER is a powerful drama about one man's struggle with conscience and belief. The Play raises important issues about religion and dogma, through a very human story.
